Fevers, Day 1
Jeremy’s been feverish all day. Doctors tell us that this is expected, but their reassurance doesn’t make us any less concerned. The nurses come in to do vitals about every 4 hours , but we’ve been using their thermometer to monitor him ourselves every 2 hours. By our account, his temperature has been fluctuating between 100 and 102.3 all day.
Jeremy is on three different antibiotics around the clock. We’re told that this is as much as they can do for him for now. They also ordered blood cultures to be done once a day in order to see if any fungal or yeast infections are present. They’re keeping a closer eye on him because of the fevers (also, I believe it is on protocol for AML patients). If the fevers persist through the weekend (Saturday), they will start treatment for a yeast or fungal infection and add an additional antibiotic. We are praying it does not come to that. Our son’s been subjected to enough medications in the short 3 weeks that we’ve been here.
Despite the persistent fever, Jeremy, for the most part, has been pretty well mannered. He spent some time in the little red car today and played a bit on his play mat. He’s been saying that he’s tired a lot, though. And his appetite hasn’t been that good today, probably as a result of the fever and his mouth sores.
Jeremy’s been having diarrhea all day, too (sorry, too much info), but it seemed to have tapered off as evening came around.
Later on in the evening he was telling us about some pains he was having. He told us his chest, lower back, and leg hurt. One of the resident doctors came in to take a look and didn’t see anything odd, but to be sure he ordered a urine culture to check for any infections.
Today was a really rough day. It was stressful with the all day fevers, multiple trips to the potty, and his poor appetite. We prayed through it all, giving everything to God and praising Him that Jeremy was mostly himself, despite the side effects and fevers today. Even now as I write this, he’s telling Alice about all the dinosaurs he saw today on Elmo’s world. “I see stegosaurus eggs. I see long, long neck. I see t-rex, too. I see baby t-rex. I see pterodactyl.”
We’ve been pretty emotional the last 3 weeks. There have been multiple episodes of crying. It’s so hard to see our son suffering without being able to take him away from all of it. There were many times where I wanted to feel his pain so he wouldn’t suffer alone. Alice has been having a hard time, too. Today, Jeremy was singing songs that he learned during the many times she took him to library story time and it brought back memories of life before all this, even though it was only 3 weeks ago. Jeremy’s reminisced about home the last few days, too. Yesterday he told Alice, “I want to go home, Momma.” Alice said she wanted the same, but we had to wait until the doctors said it’s ok. When the nurse came in, he said to her, “Doctor, I want to go home.” He mentioned going home several times today and it’s hard not being able to do just that.
Please pray:
- that there is no fungal or yeast infections in Jeremy’s system
- that God will sustain him through these fevers and that they will not persist through Saturday (7/21).
- that God provide relief for Jeremy’s mouth sores so he can eat
- that God would relieve the aches and pains Jeremy’s been feeling in his chest, lower back, and legs

hi kongs,
thanks again for the updates. i look forward to reading them every time to know how you guys are doing. anthony, you did a wonderful job w/ the blog site! i love the picture of jeremy; he has such a sweet face. my heart aches every time i read about the side effects he’s going through; makes me want to give him a big hug. he’s such an awesome kid and i miss him. i miss you guys too…a lot.
calvin, connor & i are continuously praying for you.
as for jeremy’s diarrhea, it’s likely a side effect of chemo as well as the 3 antibiotics he’s on, which is not uncommon. i know he doesn’t have much appetite but i hope he’s well-hydrated to make up for the fluids he lost from the diarrhea.
whenever you’d like to video chat, just let us know. we do understand you guys are going through a lot though so no hurry. thanks again for the updates. love you & miss you all!
Praying that this hymn gives you encouragement:
“My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less”
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
refrain
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the vale.
His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in Him be found!
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne!
